What is AI FinOps?

AI FinOps is the discipline of managing, attributing, and optimizing the cost of AI usage across an organization. It applies the cloud FinOps playbook — visibility, allocation, optimization — to tokens, models, and AI providers.

AI spend is fragmented across providers, tools, and teams, and invoices arrive without business context. Finance sees totals; nobody sees which team, workflow, or use case generated them.

AI FinOps starts with attribution: connecting every dollar of AI spend to a user, team, and purpose. Then comes control: budgets, quotas, model routing to cheaper providers where quality allows, caching to avoid paying twice for the same answer, and normalization of oversized prompts.
