What is Shadow AI?

Shadow AI is the use of AI tools, models, or agents inside an organization without the knowledge or approval of IT, security, or compliance teams. It is the AI-era version of shadow IT, and it is the default state in most enterprises today.

Employees adopt AI the way they once adopted SaaS: individually, quickly, and without asking. Web chatbots, browser extensions, coding assistants, and AI features embedded in approved tools all process company data outside any governance layer.
