What is AI Acceptable Use Policy?

An AI acceptable use policy (AI AUP) is the document that defines how employees may use AI tools: which tools are approved, what data may be shared, what review is required, and what is prohibited. It is necessary but not sufficient — policy without enforcement is a wish.

A good AI AUP is specific (named tools and data classes, not generalities), practical (approved paths for the tasks people actually do), and enforceable (violations are detectable, not honor-system).

The most common failure mode: a well-written policy PDF and zero technical means to apply it. Employees paste confidential data into unapproved tools and nobody knows.

Tokto turns policy into runtime enforcement: rules applied inside the AI conversation, before data leaves, with a record of every decision.

See how Tokto makes enterprise AI visible, governed, and accountable.
