What is EU AI Act?

The EU AI Act is the European Union’s comprehensive AI regulation, in force since August 2024, which classifies AI systems by risk tier and imposes obligations — from transparency to conformity assessment — that phase in through 2027. It is the reference point for AI regulation worldwide.

For most enterprises the near-term obligations are organizational: know what AI you use (inventory), ensure AI literacy, avoid prohibited practices, and prepare documentation and logging for high-risk and general-purpose AI usage.

The recurring theme across obligations is evidence: regulators expect organizations to show how AI is used and controlled, not just assert it.
