What is Human-in-the-Loop?
Human-in-the-loop (HITL) is a design principle in which human judgment reviews, approves, or corrects AI outputs at defined points rather than letting AI act autonomously. It is a core requirement in most AI governance frameworks and emerging regulation.
HITL is a spectrum: pre-approval of high-stakes outputs, sampling review of routine ones, or escalation only when confidence or policy flags trigger it.
The operational question is where the loop physically lives. Review cannot happen if AI usage is scattered across tools with no central point of visibility.
A supervised checkpoint gives HITL a home: flagged interactions can be held, reviewed, and recorded — proportionate oversight without stopping the business.
